Dr. Dana Woodruff is a senior research scientist with the Coastal Ecosystem Research technical group at the Marine Sciences Laboratory in Sequim. Her training and background are in biological oceanography, environmental microbiology and behavioral ecology. Her current research is focused on examining the behavioral effects of electromagnetic fields generated by underwater power transmission cables on marine organisms. She has experience managing a variety of programs that utilize remote sensing tools (e.g. satellite and airborne imagery, sonar, and video) coupled to in-situ measurements to map benthic habitats, assess land use impacts on water properties, and characterize algal blooms. She has extensive experience in water property collections in estuarine and coastal systems, and managing related research programs including fecal coliform monitoring, microbial source tracking, phytoplankton ecology, and nutrient and carbon flux.

Research Interests

  • Impact of climate change on water quality
  • Watershed and land use impacts on nearshore habitats and coastal waters
  • The use of remote sensing to understand coastal and nearshore processes
  • Coastal and estuarine water properties (optics, nutrient dynamics, carbon flux, algal blooms)
