Lidar Buoys

The MSL has 2 Lidar buoys for characterizing the wind on the open ocean. These buoys have the following measurement capabilities:

  • OADS Vindicator III lidar, which is motion compensated and can deliver 10-minute wind profile measurements to 200 m
  • Surface meteorology and solar radiation
  • Sea-surface temperature + CTD
  • Nortek Aquadopp current profiler
  • Directional wave spectrum
  • Cellular, satellite data communications
  • Flexible data acquisition system
  • Wind, solar, and diesel power
